Hood, Sir Horace (October 2, 1870, Tunbridge Wells - May 31, 1916, off the Skagerrak), British admiral. Hood entered the Royal Navy as a sea cadet in 1882. He took part in various imperial military operations: in 1897 on board a gunboat on the Nile, in the Boer War of 1898-1900, and in 1904 against the Dervishes in Somalia.At 59 years old, Hood was seeking to enter parliament for the first time. When his superior officer and the then M.P for Westminster, Admiral Sir George Rodney, had been ennobled following his victory at the Battle of the Saintes in 1782, Hood, whilst still serving in the West Indies, had unknowingly been nominated to replace him in the Westminster seat.The extremely hazardous 3,600-mile voyage he was facing had been forced upon him by his second-in-command, Fletcher Christian of His Majesty's Armed Vessel Bounty, who set him adrift following the famous mutiny.
