You can equip 1 handed swords on them and shields on the act 3. Consider than an act 5 merc can cast decrepify using a lawbringer. That's about the most useful thing I can imagine them doing. I use delerium on my act 2 merc. But acts 1, 2 or 5 mercenaries could do that just as well.The problem with phase blade is you need a very high level merc or some dex gear for him to be able to equip it. Therefore I think eth cryptic sword is best, unless you are like level 95 I have to edit this because my memory is a bit off, or they have changed it in d2r, but it looks like if you get your a5 merc in normal difficulty, it should have enough dex for a phase ……

So going by pure numbers: a2 merc wins this, though it's close.
