If you want an experience close to the base game go reforged. If you want to be an absolutely overpowered spell caster go convergence. Convergence does allow for easier exploration with all the portals to erdtrees and stuff. If you didn't enjoy er, but did enjoy darksouls, the mods will probably not save it for you.
