Galena lead

Galena is a lead sulfide mineral with a chemica

Galena has been produced from the Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district in Wisconsin since the seventeenth century. Some mines started by Native Americans may predate this. Major lead mining occurred from the 1800’s until the late 1970’s. A few small lead mines operated by individuals persist to the present day. The most common ore mineral of lead mined in the United States is galena with the chemical symbol PbS. Galena is lead sulfide with a hardness of 2.5 on the Moh's scale - actually quite soft- but it is VERY heavy with a specific gravity of 7.4 to 7.6. To put that in perspective, it weighs about 700 pounds per cubic foot!

The mining and smelting required 3 railroads, 65 crushers, 2 smelters and 3 sludge mills to handle the ore produced from as many as 250 mines. The Streak Test: Marks, known as "streaks," are produced by scraping mineral specimens across unglazed porcelain plates. On the left, a specimen of pyrite has produced a black streak. On the right, a specimen of rhodochrosite has produced a white streak. Lead sulfide is a sulfide of lead that occurs naturally as the mineral galena. It is used as a semiconductor and infrared detector. Lead is a heavy metal and stable element with the symbol Pb and the atomic number 82, existing in metallic, organic, and inorganic forms. Galena is the most abundant lead mineral, has been mined for millennia, and remains our major source of that metal. It is a metallic, lead-gray mineral with cubic cleavage and a distinctly high density that makes galena samples feel much ‘heavier’ than expected for their size. Precision: Galena (lead ore) weighs 7.6 gram per cubic centimeter or 7 600 kilogram per cubic meter, i.e. density of galena (lead ore) is equal to 7 600 kg/m³. In Imperial or US customary measurement system, the density is equal to 474.45 pound per cubic foot [lb/ft³], or 4.39 ounce per cubic inch [oz/inch³] . Galena, a gray lead sulfide (PbS), the chief ore mineral of lead. One of the most widely distributed sulfide minerals, it occurs in many different types of deposits, often in metalliferous veins, as at Broken Hill, Australia; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, U.S.; Clausthal Zellerfeld, Ger.; and Cornwall,Metals are found in the Earth either as compounds or, in the case of very unreactive metals, as the crust of the uncombined element. The rock that contains the metal is called an ore. Common metal ores include bauxite (aluminium oxide), haematite (iron oxide), zinc blende (zinc sulphide), galena (lead sulphide), and cinnabar (mercury sulphide).
