The 200 Dead Sea Scrolls translated here are a marked increase on the 62 previously published in the third edition of Geza Vermez's The Dead Sea Scrolls in English. This increase is mainly possible due to the introduction of the fascinating 'new' texts, some of which, for example 4QMMT, are still awaiting official publication.The Copper Scroll is one of the Dead Sea Scrolls found in Cave 3 near Khirbet Qumran, but differs significantly from the others.Whereas the other scrolls are written on parchment or papyrus, this scroll is written on metal: copper mixed with about 1 percent tin, although no metallic copper remained in the strips; the action of the centuries had been to convert the metal into brittle oxide. One of the most important archaeological discoveries of the past century, if not of all time, occurred in 1947, when a Middle Eastern shepherd happened upon some forgotten-about jars in a forgotten-about cave near the Dead Sea. As National Geographic reports, inside those jars were thousands of parchment scrolls, dating back 1,800 years.
