What's great about WOTR is that there's a variety of companions and most of them aren't boring. Having interesting companions is one of the biggest selling points of a party-based CRPG to me. Having a lineup of mute mercs or devoid of any personality yes-men would make the game a complete slog. At level 2 you can get outflank for free. At level 3 you can add celestial template to your animal companion which gives it a bunch of elemental resistances, damage reduction, and spell resistance in addition to smite evil. Hunters get a ability to boost a stat of your companion or give it ability, including one that gives it evasion.
